Do you know yours?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever thought about what made you the leader or the person that you are? I honestly never thought about it, until shortly before Christmas, I was honoured to attend an inspiring and fantastic leadership training facilitated by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/serhattatli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Serhat Tatli<\/a>. I thought, &#8222;Well, yet another leadership training to go through hopefully it won&#8217;t be too boring&#8220;. Indeed, it turned out to be one of the best training that I have ever attended in my career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was great, as I realised something I have never done before: At the end of this article, I will share a link so you can also go through this experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My first profession is, as you might have guessed from my previous posts, a Paramedic. I still remember my first day on the ambulance \u2013 the date was September 11th 2001, a time that nobody will ever forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paramedics are specialised healthcare professionals who respond to emergency calls for medical help. They work in ambulances and are skilled to use tools, such as defibrillators and techniques, to try to save someone&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their work is &#8211; in a nutshell &#8211; described as such:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Paramedics work in a &#8222;shoot and forget&#8220; mode<\/strong>; they are sent by the dispatch centre and are in charge of managing crises, where regular people don&#8217;t often know what to do.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paramedics often don&#8217;t know what they can expect at the scene.<\/strong>\u00a0Their first task is to get an overview, always ensuring that they are not putting themselves at risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Are the resources &amp; people sufficient?<\/strong>\u00a0Secondly, they need to assess quickly if the resources that are sent to the scene are adequate or if additional professionals are required (e.g. other ambulances, police or firefighters).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What is the main problem?\u00a0<\/strong>Once they get to the patient, they will quickly assess their vital signs, diagnose his\/her central malaise, to initiate a (life-saving) treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sometimes, readjustment is needed:\u00a0<\/strong>The first impression is not always right: At first sight, we might be unclear what exactly is the problem, so sometimes it is required to re-adjust. Read more about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/watch-out-post-can-save-lives-dr-carl-machado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my latest experience here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time is their biggest enemy.<\/strong>\u00a0Certain conditions such as cerebral infarction or a severely injured patient shall be arriving in the hospital latest 60 minutes after the emergency call. This fact requires to always re-prioritise. It&#8217;s easy: The longer a team stays on the scene, the later the patient gets into hospital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication is vital:\u00a0<\/strong>Besides the patient, they need to be empathetic, manage bystanders or relatives, which often are in an emotional crisis &#8211; they are not sure if their beloved ones will be okay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Always working in the spotlight:\u00a0<\/strong>In general, Paramedics usually work under extreme publicity; their work is often video-recorded (whether they want it or not) and at the centre of attention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the leadership training, we were asked to think about the life-changing events that influenced me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I started realising how much my work as a Paramedic affected my way of working in my corporate life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/v2\/C4D12AQGxIm5iXRZAKw\/article-inline_image-shrink_400_744\/article-inline_image-shrink_400_744\/0\/1578389277075?e=1785974400&amp;v=beta&amp;t=9A22Dh8zsb1cXbUC49TxkrmnxEz7q_3hrMm4FRbuPxw\" alt=\"I still work as a part-time paramedic in the German Emergency Medical Service\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am used to quickly assess situations and start getting impatient if discussions take too long. When planning a project, my resource planning is rather &#8222;tight&#8220; where others plan, for example, +5 FTE as a buffer. I am very well aware that resources are precious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever I do, I am highly outcome-oriented and focused. I use new tools (apps\u2026) that make my life easier and more efficient. Do I need to get all of the details (i.e. 100% of them)? No, I can work and decide with ~90% and am aware that situations need to be continually re-assessed. Naturally, I instead look for quick and successful results &#8211; working seven years on one single topic is not something I would appreciate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When communicating, I like working in teams &#8211; but at the same time, I have a clear goal in mind, which sometimes requires getting everyone re-aligned. And I step up to clear the direction again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I critically assess visions if they are doable or if they are far away from reality and unachievable. It&#8217;s part of my DNA to translate the dynamics of &#8222;wishes&#8220; into something that can be generating value for customers &amp; clients within a few years. These are probably some of the skills and talents that I share with many other Paramedics around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would never have thought that being a Paramedic would have that much effect on my daily professional life at my company. I feel that sometimes I take different approaches than my colleagues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jon-mason\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jon Mason,&nbsp;<\/a>who is an inspiring leader and was one of my sparring partners during the training, I realised that I could explain my working &amp; leading mode in one sentence:&nbsp;<em>&#8222;Fix it quickly and lead to success&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have you ever thought about, what impacted your working style?
