Do you think networking is only related to having a small talk that you dislike?

Read this short article about three simple but effective strategies on how to build and maintain your network:

In all of my podcast episodes, our guests – typically experienced leaders & executives – described how vital a strong network is to be successful at work. Dr Jürgen Weber, partner at MHP, a Porsche company, explained it to the point: „People want to do business with people they know, they like, and they trust.“

Reading this sentence, you will quickly realise that networking is much more than just small talk. Here are four tips about how you can start building and expanding your network rapidly – all you need to do is start doing it:

Take a sheet of paper and write down the name of two people inside your direct organisation. You may want to use org charts to simplify this task. Select people that you do not regularly interact with yet. They should have visibility within your company or be considered as influential.

Send a short email asking them for an informal chat, for example: „Dear Claire, I trust you’re doing well. We have not yet met/interacted – I want to connect with you informally. Would you mind meeting for a (virtual) coffee chat? Best regards, Sam“

When meeting him/her, introduce yourself without going to the „hard stuff“ directly but share some personal things to warm up: For instance, you may want to talk about your hobby or your family. When speaking, share some thoughts about what you are working on or might be soon. As you have prepared your pitch upfront, you can briefly explain it to him and ask if he wants to learn more:

„I am developing a next-gen turbine for passenger aeroplanes that has 35% reduced emissions and uses 20% less fuel. The core of this technology is a changed hardware setup and combining it with an additional component that is being patented. Do you want to learn more?“

In the end, ask him/her if there is anything you can do for him/her and follow up on this activity, in case you identified any concrete next steps. If not, make sure to share relevant information to stay connected and agree on to meet again, e.g. in eight weeks. Add a reminder in your calendar to schedule a follow-up.

Rome wasn’t built in a day – the same applies to trust. Keep on engaging, proactively share information, help him/her with relevant input or support – you will benefit from this in the future. All you need to do is taking action – today!

Are you aware, how important a professional network is?
